Waiting and Seeing on Fort Myers Beach

It's wait and see these days on the  small Island Village of Estero Island, Fort Myers Beach, Florida.  Will a Developer who has purchased several of the downtown properties be granted the variances he needs to build his grand resorts?  Will Lee County  agree to give him a County Park to be a part and parcel of his plans?  But, even without this Development, many of the old beach cottages are being torn down and in their stead, grand "mansions" are being erected.  Progress.  Progress?  I have a great liking for the old beach cottages.  I am fortunate enough to own one.  Fortunately, not all of the Cottages are being demolished.  Many homeowners prefer to update and remodel, thereby preserving the history and the charm of Fort Myers Beach.

Triplexes and Moments in Time

So, I listed this triplex on my own Street, on Fort Myers Beach, Florida, but, of course, before I could sell the place, I would need to show it to prospective Buyers. The owners' daughter, Glenda, lived in a first floor studio.  She proved to be most helpful in arranging showings with the tenants. She made everything easy for me.  She told me that she was an artist and a filmmaker.  I informed her that I was an artist, too.

I bike down my street on my way to coffee, on my way to the beach, on my way .. . .but stop when I see my new artist friend, Glenda, outside her little apartment  and her artist friend, Tony.

Tony has this amazing studio overlooking Estero Boulevard.  I often meet the two of them there.  We talk about art and life and Fort Myers Beach. We walk the streets and stop for a beer, for lunch.  We hang out in this manner for a couple of years.  Glenda's Film, Sleepers Awake, is featured in the Fort Myers Beach Festival and stars herself, Tony, my husband, Lloyd, and me.

Two years or so later:  The Triplex long sold, Glenda has moved to Cape Coral, but she comes to the Island practically every week  to visit me and we see Tony at his studio  . . . . but Tony and his brothers have decided it's time to sell the building and the studio.  Tony is now on his way to a sabbatical in Mexico . .. to a new adventure.

I am describing a long moment in time.  None of us can go back, but my heart is full with the memories.

Not All Fun!

A frustrating morning.  A closing coming up at the end of the month, and I have still not received certain HOA documents from the Seller's Agent.  And, the tenant is not being cooperative about the Inspection.  And, the Buyer, my client, is getting on my case even though I email and call the Seller's Agent practically every day in order to resolve these matters.  Then, I'm planning a Yard Sale this weekend and need to find time to prepare the signs and get all of the items together.  I am determined to de-clutter the house and have bunches of stuff, furniture, paintings, decor items, clothes, etc to set out and hopefully sell.

Feeling overwhelmed, I hop on my bike and head out into the Florida summer for a ride, and stop at Heavenly Biscuit for coffee and an egg sandwich.  I take a sit on the deck next to three young folks, mid-20's or thereabouts, two guys and a girl.  The girl was going on and on about how she was just given this beach wrap and didn't know how to wear it.  She tells her boyfriend and the other male that she would  look up "beach wrap" on the Internet.  I advise her the name of the item is "saraong."  She thanks me and tells me that she just moved to Fort Myers from New York and never had a Sarong before.  I instruct her on how to wear it and, in fact, dress her in it.  She then sits down next to her boyfriend and tells him that she wishes that she and her Mom could make amends.  She then leaves the table in search of water.  The boyfriend says to his friend:  We better leave now; else, she'll go on and on about her Mom.  But, when the girl returns, she doesn't re-introduce the subject.

Moments later, a local girl climbs up the stairs to the deck and is about to to inside when the boyfriend says "hi" to her.  She responds enthusiastically:  Well, hi, how are you?  Haven't see you in awhile.  They begin chatting while the man's girlfriend sits silently looking peeved.  The conversation mostly concerns the status of this girl's own boyfriend, currently incarcerated.  This girl also uses the "f' word frequently.  She finally goes inside and the girlfriend turns to the boyfriend and says:  Why is it that you know every white trash girl around?  You are totally disgusting.  He seems taken about:  What did I do?  I just said hi to her.

Feeling energized by the conversation and coffee, I head home, ready to tackle the Seller's agent yet again, and the Yard Sale.

Searching on Sanibel

I don't know how many people have told me that they are simply in love with Sanibel, but it's not a small number of folks.  So, I'm always on the lookout for good deals on Sanibel, as the real estate at this locale is not inexpensive. A great home just came onto the market, a foreclosure:
Located in the heart of Sanibel Island, this piling home has 1311 square feet under air and over 3000 total square footage. There's a huge lanai overlooking the lush landscaping and nature that defines Sanibel.  Situated on
.3 acres.  Listed at $395,200.
Sanibel is well known for the amazing seashells on gorgeous white beaches and the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, situated on over one-third of the land mass in Sanbel.  I love shelling and I love the nature and the birds in Ding Darling, but there's another place in Sanibel that deserves some attention:  Bennett's Fresh Roast, a coffee shop.

Now, I'm not a donut person, but this establishment makes the best donuts that I have ever eaten in my life.  I partiuclarly love their glazed variety.
